—Info on Emitter Micro Festival 2011—
Emitter Micro Festival 2011 was a series of small performances and installations on November 25th, 26th and 27th 2011 at Emitter19 studios in Berlin. Our studios are small, concerts were intimate!
“The next night’s highlight was the duet by Tony Buck (percussion) and Magda Mayas (prepared piano). Harmonics seeped from all that they struck, scraped and wrung out producing a luscious ebb and flow of complex layers. Lost in the evocations of this piece, I imagined at one point that I was hearing the everyday sounds of a small town, notated and reproduced in musical form. Eyes closed, I lost track of instrument identity sometimes and had to look back at the stage to understand exactly what was creating these sounds so full of cadence, resonance and melody”

Andy Moor is an experimental musician, best known as the guitarist of the UK band Dog Faced Hermans and the Dutch punk collective The Ex. He was also a founding member of Kletka Red and along with Isabelle Vigier and Yannis Kyriakides created the experimental music label Unsounds.
Anne-James Chaton has developed a multipolar body of work, based on a close study of the textual materials which make up the everyday life of contemporary society. This ‘poor’ literature, known as « ephemera », comprising a multitude of documents printed out by innumerable machines is the source of Anne-James’ quests into sound, poetry and visual art, which he develops through solo projects and in collaboration with artists from diverse fields.
Born in Tokyo in 1971, studied musicology at the Kunitachi College of Music in Tokyo, graduated 1996. During this period he began to play the electronic pieces by John Cage and his own sound performances. Since then he deals with sound performances, installations and video. Morimoto is interested in the uncertain phenomena between ordinary objects, such as water and stones, and the technological medium. He lives and works in Berlin since 2003.
Rinus van Alebeek (1956, Heerlen, The Netherlands) is a writer who uses his (environmental) recordings on tape to narrate a story. In the first decade of this century van Alebeek made a thorough research on how to make or manipulate recordings. Thanks to a great number of concerts, sometimes an average of ten in a month, he developed an approach of which people say it is ‘ between noise and pure poetry.’
“Rinus Van Alebeek is a peculiar observer of reality and an artist who instinctively transforms lo-fi tape recordings into evocative sound poems, being able to create a “détachement” towards the used media, which is a characteristic of the most original artists.”
Luis Costa, president of Binaural and Associação Cultural de Nodar
Diatribes, a strongly libertarian ensemble, began its existence in a Geneva basement in Winter 2004. Adapting the improvised and experimental music languages of today, the duo is highly reactive, dynamic, percussive and/or textured. Initially a trio, diatribes became a polymorphous formation, accurately incomplete, extending each time its spectrum with guest musicians, from freejazz to electroacoustic improv, from loud sound wall to intimate acoustic details.
The tuba player and composer Robin Hayward, born in Brighton, England in 1969, has been based in Berlin since 1998. He has redefined the tuba’s potential both in the areas of noise and microtonality, and his compositions for other instruments reflect a similar experimental, medium-specific approach. Active in many contemporary music ensembles including Phosphor and Kammerensemble Neue Musik Berlin, in 2005 he founded Zinc & Copper Works for continued research into brass instruments.
It is under the name of Anton Mobin that Antony Baron produces his radio creations and performances. Anton Mobin’s sound activities evolve in two universes: improvised music and radio art.He defines himself his initiative in the continuity of the concrete music: his approach is directed on the listening of the sounds of the everyday life and their use in the radio composition, to develop an “extensive” concrete music.
Diversion and manipulation of sound objects, trivial fragments and reorganization of the reality are so many ways investigated in his creations.Since 2001, he manages the label of experimental music H.A.K. Lo-Fi Record and curates the project of on-line improvisation ” Impronet “. In 2007, Anton Mobin joins the team of the webradio ARTE Radio for which he realizes sound creations in the group OuRaPo.
Born 1982, Taranto (Italy) Sound artist, composer and performer. Lives and works in Berlin. Her research is focused upon the hidden archaic memory in music and upon the writing in its multiple forms. Working with sound and its relationship to a space and territory opens the possibility to explore her own history and identity as part of a collective memory. Ezramo investigates the human voice as a multi-faceted instrument, radically extending classical boundaries. She combines her voice with acoustic instruments like prepared zither, piano, percussion, Theremin and with Field Recordings, crossing disciplines like sonic poetry and instant composition, visual and performance art.
Born in Iran and emigrated to the US, received a BA in Molecular biology and later an MFA in NYC in installation art. Has been living in Berlin since the last 8 years where she has been performing as an experimental musician using Supercollider, an audio synthesis programming environment. She is the co-founder of NK Projekt a space dedicated to sound arts since the last three years. She has organized over 30 workshops during this time as well as worked with a team of organizers to bring the Supercollider symposium to Berlin in 2010. Recently, NK was invited to be an official satellite program of Transmediale 2011 in Berlin where she acted as curator / organizer.
Born in 1984, he taught himself to play the trumpet and then studied jazz and improvisation at the conservatories of Lyon (CNR) and Paris (CNSMDP). While developing his own personal and original language on his instrument, he researched, through different collaborations, an intuitive and spontaneous approach to music. His interest is essentially in different forms of improvised music for various formations, ranging from solo to orchestral.
His work is focused principally on two topics. Firstly an acoustic approach to instruments through research on sounds and sound effects in relation to the space in which they are produced. Secondly work on the amplification of instruments (“close miking”) with the aim of creating the illusion of an electric or electronic “machine instrument”.
Pierre Schaeffer – «Études aux chemins de fer»
(Pierre Borel – alto sax//Hannes Lingens – snare drum & objects)
Pierre Schaeffer’s «Études aux chemins de fer» is regarded as the first piece of music to organize noises on the basis of an entirely musical aesthetic. Its first public performance in the «Concert de bruits» radio broadcast in Paris on 5.10.1948, marks the birth of the French «musique concrète» school.
The piece is based on recordings that Schaeffer made at the Gare des Batignolles in Paris with the aid of six engine-drivers «improvising» according to his instructions. When working on these, Schaeffer was aiming to use alienation techniques to erase the semantic components of the noises and emphasize their musical values like rhythm, tone colour and pitch.
Hannes Lingens and Pierre Borel play an acoustic version of the piece, using the audio visualization as a score, improvising with and around it, blending and crossfading sounds derived from extended instrumental techniques, exploring and extending the material and gesture of the original piece.
Christoph Limbach+Pierce Warnecke
Christoph “kris” Limbach (born in 1978, Germany) is a sound artist living in berlin. His background in applied physics and his work as a sound engineer for filmmakers has a significant influence in his current field recording and improvisation based sound work. In 2009-2010 he published the first two parts of the long-term sound incidences series called begin_ if _ (). Christoph Limbach has participated in sound projects and bands such as “nocte obducta” and the noise-punk-experiment “reward lost puppy”, which he initiated in 2005. he has been involved with sound performances in madrid (e.g. “dentro-sonido” at casa encendida, 2004) and in berlin.
Pierce Warnecke’s work stems from his interest in the effects of time on matter: modification, deterioration and disappearance. The goal of his work is to readapt existing materials into a parallel context where their signified meanings, symbols and cultural connections have become residual ghosts. He has performed with artists such as Phill Niblock and Gino Robair, and has presented his works in such places as Harvestworks (NY), GASP Gallery (Boston), Luggage Store Gallery (SF), AMODA (Austin) and Le Labo (Toronto).
